Target Audience

This activity is intended for cardiologists and other health care professionals attending the AHA 2007 Annual Meeting.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Analyze the causes of thrombotic occlusion in ACS and the central pathological role played by platelet activation
  • Explain that the primary goal is to restore myocardial perfusion, while minimizing risk of ischemic complications and subsequent concerns about bleeding in ACS patients
  • Describe registry data and clinical trials considering the use of antiplatelet agents in primary PCI
  • Apply the updated ACC/AHA UA/NSTEMI guidelines to clinical practice
  • Compare the risk of ischemic complications versus the risk of excessive bleeding associated with the various agents currently used to manage ACS, and with emerging treatment alternatives
